Hospice is a set of services, rather than a place, that helps patients and families address the many issues that arise at the end of life. This care is provided when a patient chooses to pursue comfort care rather than curative treatment and a doctor’s prognosis affirms a life expectancy of six months or less if the disease follows its natural course. The goal of care focuses on quality of life through pain and symptom management. At the center of hospice care is the belief that each of us has the right to die pain-free and with dignity, and that our families will receive the necessary support to allow us to do so.
As the first hospice to serve southern New Jersey, Samaritan has been providing hospice care to patients and families in South Jersey from the early inceptions of this philosophy of care in 1980. A team of healthcare professionals support the patient and their family in this time by providing visits, education, medication and medical equipment among other things.

Coping with an advanced illness can be an overwhelming experience. There are many issues to understand, tough decisions to make and anxieties to confront. Recognizing that an advanced illness affects everyone who cares for and about a patient, hospice provides expert medical care and pain management for the patient as well as emotional and spiritual support for the entire family.
A Caring Team that Makes House Calls
Samaritan Hospice offers a team approach that focuses on the needs and wishes of each patient and caregiver. In most cases, we provide care where our patient lives – whether that is a private home or apartment, assisted living residence or nursing home. Home-centered care allows families or caregivers to have more involvement in a loved one's care, more opportunities to make decisions, and greater time to spend together in comfortable surroundings.
Choosing Samaritan Hospice
Anyone can make a referral for Samaritan Hospice care. In fact, some patients refer themselves. We contact the patient's physician to ensure that hospice care is the best choice at this stage of illness. Once the patient and family agree to consider our care, a Samaritan representative schedules a meeting to determine the patient's and family's needs and wishes and to explain the services we can provide to meet them. The initial visit can take place at the patient's home, in the hospital, assisted living facility, long-term care facility, or wherever is most convenient for the patient and family.To complete the hospice admission process, the patient and/or family member will sign various consent forms required by Medicare or Medicaid, insurance or accrediting organizations. Samaritan admissions take place within 24 hours of the referral, unless a family requests otherwise, so that help and comfort can begin as soon as possible.
